Group of Geoinformation Systems
The main research trends are: creation of specialised geographical information systems and databases; use of satellite telemetry methods in ecological investigations; quantitative and qualitative analysis of the structure of Lithuanian land cover, and modelling of the landscape structure using aerial photos and digital elevation model; research on long-term land cover changes and variability of ecosystems; creation of unanimous ecological information system for the Baltic Region.
The group was founded in 2003.
In 2004, the group was confirmed GIS Coordination Centre (HELCOM/ICES) of the Baltic Region.

Research on long-term Lithuanian land cover changes using satellite telemetry data
Research Services
- Creation and realisation of specialised GIS and models of thematic databases (Computer-Aided Software Engineering – CASE Tools; MS Visio software), updating GIS databases (ESRI ArcGIS, MapInfo Professional and R2V software).
- Geometrical and spectral correction, decipherment and thematic analysis of satellite telemetry data (satellite photos) (ERDAS Imagine software).
- Geostatistical modelling, analysis of spatial distribution (Vertical Mapper, Spatial Analyst software), creation of surface relief (height) models.
- Conversion of GIS databases and satellite telemetry data, determination and transformation of coordinate system parameters, creation of topological structure of bases, and correction of topological mistakes (ArcEdit software).
- Creation, printing and scanning of digital thematic maps on A0 format, putting them on Internet (static views), creation and maintenance of Internet information systems.
